01
Background
& Brief
In 2014, Godrej & Elle Décor India held a design competition. The Iktar stool and Bongo coffee table won and were displayed at India Design ID 2015. I created the Iktar first, then developed the full Dhuun collection. The competition brief was to design a lifestyle product with no material or technique restrictions.
02
Research Observation
During market research, I discovered a lack of product lines with a strong Indian identity. Research showed that three to four design styles were popular in India: Traditional, Modern, and Nordic. However, there was no product line that represented Modern Indian design.
To create a Modern Indian design that incorporates Indian tradition, art, and culture while appealing to young Indian consumers, I aimed to symbolize India through furniture.
03
Idea
The concept of the Dhuun Collection started with the question: "How to define India?" India is defined by its rich heritage, culture, music, food, and people. Indian classical music is one of the art forms for which India is renowned.
Inspired by this, I considered symbolizing India through furniture designed based on Indian musical instruments.
04
Ideation & Exploration
During the ideation process, I used different musical instruments as inspiration and experimented with furniture forms. My goal was to create minimal furniture forms with a subtle representation of the musical instruments, allowing users to make a connection.
